Established in 1980 through United Nations General Assembly Resolution 35/201, the Reham Al-Farra Memorial Journalism Fellowship initially operated as the "DPI Training Programme for Broadcasters and Journalists." In 2003, it was renamed in honor of Reham Al-Farra, a 29-year-old public information officer who tragically lost his life on August 19, 2003, in a bombing at the UN headquarters in Baghdad.

To date, this fellowship has been awarded to 596 journalists from 168 different countries. Upon completion of the program, participants are equipped to continue their journalistic work with a deeper understanding of the United Nations and its role in their respective nations.
