The African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) is offering a PhD Fellowship in Economics for the 2023 academic year. This fellowship, available to qualified and motivated individuals, is a collaboration between the AERC and the University of the Witwatersrand's School of Economics and Finance (SEF). The program blends the traditional PhD structure with partnerships with other African universities, providing a rigorous and competitive path toward a doctoral degree in economics. The fellowship is located in South Africa.

Candidates participating in this program will have the opportunity to learn alongside students from other African universities offering degrees. This learning experience will occur both on our campus and optionally at a shared facility in Nairobi, Kenya. The program encompasses four years of study, including core courses, elective subjects, thesis proposal development, fieldwork, thesis preparation, and defense training. Students will engage in coursework at both the University of Cape Town and Nairobi, Kenya, before focusing on their thesis component at WITS.
A limited number of **full scholarships** will be awarded competitively to applicants from the Sub-Saharan Africa region. Applicants from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region are strongly encouraged to apply.
The program commences in January each year. The application deadline for the 2023 intake is **31 July 2022**. Kindly note that this program is exclusively offered on a **full-time** basis.
